Green building practices include a variety of construction practices that are environmentally responsible and resource efficient. For optimum efficiency these practices have to extend throughout the buildings life cycle which consist of:
1. Site preparation
2. Design
3. Construction
4. Operation
5. Maintenance
6. Renovation
7. Demolition
Green buildings are designed to reduce the overall impact of the built environment on human health and the natural environment. This is done by:
~ Efficiently using energy, water, and resources (building materials)
~ Protecting occupant health
~ Reducing waste, pollution, and environmental degradation.
The decisions addressed in the early processes of design are the most cost effective investments when building a sustainable home. An example of this is building orientation with proper sizing of overhangs and the use of vegetation (deciduous trees) to allow solar gain in the winter and shading in the summer.
Different practices are used to reduce energy consumption in sustainable buildings. This includes the embodied energy required to extract, process, transport, and install materials as well as the energy required to operate the structure throughout the course of its life cycle.
To reduce embodied energy use it is desirable to obtain materials locally when possible. Green building guidelines recommend obtaining materials within 150 miles of the construction site.
There are many options available to reduce operating energy use, and to increase the efficiency of the building envelope. The use of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs), blown-in insulation, the possible use of solar energy for electricity and water heating purposes, energy efficient windows and appliances.
